Gaudí built it between 1886 and 1888 for his patron Eusebi Güell, on a narrow street off La Rambla. It is one of his first major works and one of the few he saw completed, with a sober façade and two great parabolic wrought-iron gates.
Inside, everything revolves around a central hall three storeys high, crowned by a perforated dome that mimics a starry sky. On the roof are some twenty chimneys covered in coloured trencadís mosaic, a foretaste of La Pedrera.
