The square was built in the mid-19th century on the site of a Capuchin convent, with arcades, uniform neoclassical façades and a central fountain ringed by palm trees. It is a step from La Rambla, but tucked away behind a passage.
Its two six-armed lampposts, topped with Mercury's helmet, were one of the first municipal commissions for a newly qualified Gaudí, in 1879. Today the square is full of terraces and, at night, of bars and music clubs.
