It opened in 1963 and occupies five adjoining medieval palaces on Carrer Montcada. It is the great museum of Picasso's formative years: childhood drawings, work from his time at Barcelona's fine arts school and from the Blue Period.
The best-known piece is the series of 58 works in which he reinterpreted Velázquez's Las Meninas in 1957, which Picasso himself donated to the museum. The Gothic courtyards of the palaces are part of the charm.
