This was Barcelona's first covered market, opened in the mid-19th century on the site of a former convent. Architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue remodelled it in 2005, keeping the old walls and adding a wavy roof.
That roof, made of thousands of coloured hexagonal ceramic tiles, mimics the colours of the fruit and vegetables on the stalls. Inside it is a genuine neighbourhood market, with far fewer tourists than La Boqueria.
