La Barceloneta was built in the mid-18th century as a fishermen's quarter of narrow streets and low houses, to rehouse residents who lost their homes when the Ciutadella fortress went up. Its beach is the closest to the old town.
Much of the waterfront was transformed for the 1992 Olympic Games, with the promenade, beach bars and sculptures such as «L'Estel ferit», Rebecca Horn's stacked cubes. In summer it fills up from early morning.
