The building at Andrássy 60 was the headquarters of the Arrow Cross, Hungary's Nazi party, in 1944, and then for years of the communist political police. The museum opened in 2002 and tells the story of the two dictatorships Hungary endured in the 20th century.
The visit starts in the courtyard, with a Soviet tank and a wall of victims' photographs, and moves through rooms on deportations, labour camps and the 1956 revolution. It ends with a slow lift ride down to the reconstructed cells in the basement.
