Miklós Ybl designed it in Neo-Renaissance style, and it opened in 1884 on Andrássy Avenue. Franz Joseph insisted it be no larger than the Vienna Opera, so the builders made up for it in luxury: marble, gold and frescoes by Károly Lotz.
It reopened in 2022 after a renovation of almost five years. The horseshoe-shaped auditorium seats about 1,200 under a huge bronze chandelier, and the tour also takes in the grand staircase and the royal box.
