The neo-Gothic Hungarian Parliament on the Danube, crowned by its central dome

Museums & culture · Budapest

Hungarian Parliament Building

Lipótváros

Imre Steindl designed it to mark Hungary's millennium, and it was finished in 1904. It is 268 metres long, has almost 700 rooms and its dome reaches 96 metres, the same height as St Stephen's Basilica, since no building in the city was to rise above them.

The interior can only be seen on a guided tour of about 45 minutes. You climb the gilded, frescoed grand staircase to the dome hall, where the Hungarian Holy Crown is kept under guard, and see the former upper chamber of parliament.
