In 1944 and 1945, Arrow Cross militiamen marched thousands of Jews to the bank of the Danube, made them take off their shoes, which were valuable, and shot them so the river would carry the bodies away.
In 2005 the film director Can Togay and the sculptor Gyula Pauer placed sixty pairs of iron shoes here, men's, women's and children's, as if just left behind. Many visitors leave flowers, candles and stones inside them.
