The Millennium Monument was begun in 1896 to mark a thousand years since the Magyars arrived, and was finished decades later. At its centre a 36-metre column carries the Archangel Gabriel, with Árpád and the six other tribal chieftains on horseback at its foot.
Behind it, two curved colonnades hold statues of kings and heroes from Hungarian history. In front is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and on either side stand the Museum of Fine Arts and the Műcsarnok exhibition hall.
