The restaurant opened in 1894 beside the zoo in City Park, and in 1910 it was bought by Károly Gundel, the chef who modernised Hungarian cooking and made it famous abroad. Kings, presidents and popes have dined in its rooms.
Its best-known dish is Gundel pancakes, filled with walnuts, raisins and rum and covered in chocolate sauce, now a classic dessert across the country. It closed during the pandemic and reopened in 2021 under new management.
