Inside Szimpla Kert, crammed with mismatched furniture, lights and hanging junk

Special place · Budapest

Szimpla Kert

Jewish Quarter

It opened in the early 2000s and in 2004 moved into a former stove factory on Kazinczy utca, in the Jewish quarter. It was the first of the romkocsma, the ruin bars that took over the area's abandoned buildings with second-hand furniture.

It is a maze of rooms, courtyards and stairways decorated with bathtubs, old computers, hanging bikes and a Trabant you can sit in. At night it has gigs and big crowds; by day it is a calm café where you can look around properly.
