It takes its name from one of the gates of the Moorish wall that ringed the city, remains of which stand nearby. It is an open square with the statue of São Vicente, Lisbon's patron saint, holding a boat with two ravens, the city's emblem.
From the edge you see almost all of Alfama, with the church of São Vicente de Fora and the white dome of Santa Engrácia, the National Pantheon. Beside the square is the Museum of Decorative Arts, in a 17th-century palace.
