The hill has been fortified since Roman times, but the present castle was built by the Moors in the 11th century. Afonso Henriques captured it in 1147, and it was the palace of Portugal's kings until the 16th century. Much of what you see today is a 1940s restoration.
You can walk the walls and their eleven towers. The Tower of Ulysses has a camera obscura that projects the city live, and the grounds keep remains of Moorish houses and of the palace. Peacocks roam the gardens.
