Westminster Abbey

Westminster

Edward the Confessor consecrated a great church here in 1065, and since William the Conqueror in 1066 almost every English monarch has been crowned in it, most recently Charles III in 2023. Henry III began the present Gothic church in 1245.

More than 3,000 people are buried here: Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawking among them. Poets' Corner holds Chaucer and Dickens, and up in the triforium, 16 metres high, the Diamond Jubilee Galleries display the abbey's treasures.
