It is London's oldest royal park: Henry VIII bought the land in 1532, and Charles II remodelled it after returning from exile in France, with a canal that John Nash turned into today's lake in the 1820s. It lies between Buckingham Palace, Whitehall and Horse Guards Parade.
The lake's pelicans descend from those the Russian ambassador gave the king in 1664. From the Blue Bridge in the middle, you see Buckingham Palace one way and the rooftops of Whitehall, with the London Eye, the other.
