A grassy hill north of Regent's Park with one of London's protected views: from the top the whole skyline, St Paul's included, spreads out in front of you.

The Victorian twin-towered bascule bridge that still lifts to let ships through. Its high walkways have glass-floor sections looking straight down to the Thames.

Central London's great royal park, with the Serpentine lake, rowing boats, Speakers' Corner and open lawns that run straight into Kensington Gardens.

The oldest royal park, between Westminster and Buckingham Palace, with a lake full of waterfowl and resident pelicans. Its bridge looks to the palace one way and Whitehall the other.

Nature & beaches· Marylebone
A royal park ringed by white stucco Regency terraces, with the rose beds of Queen Mary's Gardens, a boating lake and the canal along its northern edge.

Shopping· Notting Hill
Notting Hill's antiques-market street, lined with pastel-coloured houses. On Saturdays it fills with stalls of silver, furniture, clothing and food.

Before you go
Entry costs nothing, but you need to book on its website. New slots are released weekly about three weeks ahead, and sunset times go fast.
From the top you see the whole skyline as the sun goes down behind you. Walk there across Regent's Park.
St James's Park, Green Park and Hyde Park link up almost without touching tarmac: a green walk from Westminster to Kensington.
Portobello Road's antiques market is at its fullest on Saturdays. On other days the street is calmer and many stalls stay shut.
