The street is named after the capture of Porto Bello in Panama in 1739, and the market began in the 19th century selling fruit and vegetables. Antique dealers arrived in the 1950s, and on Saturdays it is now considered one of the world's largest antiques markets.
The upper stretch, by the pastel-coloured houses, is for silver, clocks and furniture; further down there is food, fruit and, under the Westway flyover, vintage clothing. «Notting Hill» was filmed in the area.
