It opened in 1911 for the insurer La Unión y el Fénix, designed by the French architects Jules and Raymond Février, and marks the start of Gran Vía at its corner with Calle de Alcalá. Its curved façade combines columns, sculptures and French-style balconies.
The slate dome with gold-leaf decoration is crowned by a bronze winged Victory, which replaced the original phoenix when the building passed to the Metrópolis insurance company in 1972. The phoenix was moved to the gardens of the firm's headquarters.
