It began in the 17th century as the garden of Philip IV's Buen Retiro palace and opened to the public in 1868. It covers about 125 hectares and, together with the Paseo del Prado, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021 as the «Landscape of Light».
Its heart is the large lake, with rowing boats and the monument to Alfonso XII. It is worth wandering on to the Rose Garden, the Velázquez Palace or the Fallen Angel statue, one of the few in the world dedicated to the devil.
