Charles III commissioned this triumphal gate from Francesco Sabatini, completed in 1778, to replace an older one at the entrance to Madrid on the road from Alcalá. It is often described as the first Roman-style triumphal arch built in Europe after the fall of the Empire.
It has five openings, three arches and two rectangular gateways, and stands in the middle of Plaza de la Independencia, surrounded by traffic. One of the main entrances to the Retiro is next to it, and Calle de Alcalá runs down from here to Cibeles.
