Bergamo is two towns: the modern lower town and the medieval upper town, on a hill ringed by walls the Venetian Republic built in the 16th century. Those walls have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017 and you can walk them past bastions and gates.
The heart is Piazza Vecchia, with the Palazzo della Ragione and the Campanone tower. Behind it, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has a spectacular Baroque interior, and next door the Colleoni Chapel, in coloured marble, holds the tomb of the mercenary captain Bartolomeo Colleoni.
