Tips for Milan

Transport, opening hours, food and what to avoid.

  1. Getting there

    From Malpensa, take the train

The Malpensa Express reaches Cadorna or Centrale station in about 50 minutes. It needs its own Trenord ticket: city transport tickets aren't valid on it, not even inside Milan.

  2. Getting there

    From Linate, take the metro

The blue M4 line leaves from the terminal itself and reaches San Babila, a short walk from the Duomo, in about 15 minutes on a standard city fare.

  3. Getting around

Tap your card at the gate

Paper tickets were scrapped in 2026: just tap a contactless card or phone on the reader in the metro, trams or buses. A city fare is €2.20 and lasts 90 minutes.

  4. Getting around

Tram 1 is a sight in itself

Wooden trams from the 1920s still run on line 1, which passes La Scala. It's the prettiest way across the centre, on an ordinary fare.

  5. Eating

Aperitivo hour is 6 to 9 pm

Order a Campari, spritz or Negroni and snacks usually come with it, sometimes a whole buffet. It's the city's pre-dinner ritual, especially in the Navigli and Brera.

  6. Eating

    The coperto isn't a scam

Many restaurant bills include a fixed per-person charge for bread and table service. It's legal and normal; tipping on top is optional.

  7. Eating

Drink your coffee at the bar

An espresso standing at the counter costs far less than the same cup at a table, especially around Piazza del Duomo and the Galleria.

  8. Opening hours

    Mondays, museums close

Brera, The Last Supper, the Castle museums and the Novecento are shut on Mondays. Use the day for walking, shopping or a trip to the lake.

  9. Watch out

    The 'free' bracelets

On Piazza del Duomo people tie a string bracelet on your wrist or put corn for the pigeons in your hand, then ask for money. Keep walking without stopping.
