Cardinal Federico Borromeo founded the library in 1609, one of the first in Europe open to the public, and soon after the picture gallery built on his own collection. It remains a centre of study, and the museum rooms keep the feel of a collector's palace.
Here you'll find Caravaggio's Basket of Fruit, the Portrait of a Musician attributed to Leonardo and Raphael's huge preparatory cartoon for The School of Athens. The library holds the Codex Atlanticus, the largest collection of Leonardo's drawings and notes, with a rotating selection of pages on display.
