Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Duomo

Giuseppe Mengoni designed it as a cross-shaped covered street linking Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Scala, built between 1865 and 1877. He fell to his death from scaffolding a few days before it opened. At the centre is an octagon under a glass-and-iron dome, decorated with mosaics of the four continents.

The floor carries the coats of arms of the cities of newly united Italy. On the bull of Turin there's a worn hole: tradition says spinning on it with your heel brings luck. Historic shops and cafés are still here, including the first Prada store, opened in 1913, and Camparino at the entrance.
