Poldi Pezzoli Museum

Quadrilatero

Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, an aristocratic collector, decorated each room of his palazzo in a different historical style to show off his collection, and left it to the city on his death. It opened as a museum in 1881. Bombing in 1943 damaged the building, and after the war the rooms were rebuilt around the pieces that had been taken to safety.

Its most famous work is Piero del Pollaiuolo's Portrait of a Lady, a Renaissance profile that became the museum's emblem. There are also works by Botticelli, Mantegna and Piero della Francesca, plus clocks, jewellery and porcelain.
