Antonio Cova, one of Napoleon's soldiers, founded the pastry shop in 1817 next to La Scala, and through the 19th century it was a meeting place for patriots and artists. Wartime bombing destroyed the original, and in 1950 it moved to Via Montenapoleone, where it remains.
There's a marble counter for coffee standing up and mirrored, chandeliered rooms for sitting down. It's famous for its small pastries, chocolates and Christmas panettone, one of the most prized in the city.
