Catherine de' Medici created the garden in 1564 beside her new Tuileries Palace, built where tile works (tuileries) once stood. André Le Nôtre, the gardener of Versailles, redesigned it in 1664. The palace burned during the 1871 Commune and was never rebuilt.
Its walks follow the great axis of Paris, running from the Louvre to the Concorde, the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe. There are ponds ringed with metal chairs, sculptures by Maillol and Rodin and, in summer, a funfair with a big wheel.
