It was built between 1905 and 1912 on the site of the Royal Court, the palace of the Bohemian kings in the Old Town. It is the masterpiece of Czech Art Nouveau: the façade has a golden mosaic, «Homage to Prague», and the leading artists of the day worked inside; Alfons Mucha decorated the Mayor's Hall.
At its heart is Smetana Hall, where the Prague Spring festival opens every 12 May with «Má vlast». Czechoslovak independence was proclaimed here on 28 October 1918.
