Its official name is Parco Savello, because it fills the courtyard of a 13th-century fortress of the Savelli family, whose walls still stand. The present garden was laid out in 1932, with bitter orange trees recalling the one Saint Dominic is said to have planted in the convent next door.
At the end, a terrace looks out over the Tiber, Trastevere and St Peter's dome. Beside the entrance is the 5th-century basilica of Santa Sabina, with a carved wooden door from the same period, one of the oldest to survive.
