Before you go

How to see Rome's viewpoints

  1. The Aventine in one walk

The Orange Garden and the Knights of Malta keyhole are two minutes apart. Go early or at sunset: by mid-afternoon there's a queue at the keyhole.

  2. Janiculum at noon

A cannon is fired below the Janiculum terrace every day at 12:00. It's a steep 15-minute walk up from Trastevere.

  3. Pincio at sunset

From the Pincio the sun sets behind St Peter's. Walk down to Piazza del Popolo afterwards and follow Via del Corso into the centre.

  4. Paid views

The Vittoriano's top terrace and Castel Sant'Angelo charge for entry; the other viewpoints here are free, in public parks or open streets.
