Before you go

How to visit Rome's museums

  1. Borghese is booking only

The Borghese Gallery runs on compulsory timed reservations that sell out days ahead. Book it first, on the official website.

  2. Vatican in the morning

Take the first slot at museivaticani.va and leave St Peter's for afterwards: the basilica is free, but the security queue in the square gets long around midday.

  3. Last Sunday: free but packed

On the last Sunday of each month the Vatican Museums open free in the morning, with very long queues. If time is short, pay on another day.

  4. Churches are open to all

Santa Maria in Trastevere and most churches are free; avoid wandering during mass and carry something to cover your shoulders.
