Pope Julius II started them in the early 16th century with a handful of classical statues, including the Laocoön, still in the Octagonal Court. Today they stretch for kilometres: the Pinacoteca, the Gallery of Maps, the Rooms Raphael painted with the School of Athens, and the Egyptian museum.
Everything leads to the Sistine Chapel, with the ceiling Michelangelo painted between 1508 and 1512 and the Last Judgement over the altar. Silence is requested and photos are not allowed.
