Before you go

How to see ancient Rome

  1. Start early

Enter the Colosseum first thing and move on to the Forum and Palatine before the heat builds: there's very little shade. Bring a bottle; there are drinking fountains on site.

  2. The Capitol as a viewpoint

Finish at the Capitoline Museums or, if you skip them, walk round behind City Hall for a free view over the whole Forum.

  3. The Appian Way by bike

The best stretch begins beyond Porta San Sebastiano. Hire a bike near the park and wear sturdy shoes: the Roman paving is very uneven.

  4. Ostia by train

Ostia Antica is about 30 minutes on the Roma-Lido train from Porta San Paolo station, next to Piramide metro. Allow half a day.
