The 135 steps were built between 1723 and 1726 with French money, linking the church of Trinità dei Monti with the square below, named after the Spanish embassy to the Holy See. At the bottom is the Barcaccia fountain, a half-sunken boat by Pietro Bernini, Gian Lorenzo's father.
In the house to the right of the steps the poet John Keats died in 1821, and it is now a small museum. From the top you can see straight down Via dei Condotti, the luxury shopping street.
