The Trevi Fountain, with Oceanus at its centre above the turquoise basin

Trevi Fountain

Trevi

Nicola Salvi designed it in 1732 and it was finished thirty years later, at the end of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct that still feeds it. In the middle stands Oceanus on a shell chariot drawn by sea horses, one calm and one restless, like the two moods of the sea.

Tradition says that if you throw a coin over your shoulder, right hand over left shoulder, you will return to Rome. More than a million euros are collected each year, and the city gives it to Caritas to fund soup kitchens.
