The terrace was designed by Giuseppe Valadier in the early 19th century, in the same project that gave Piazza del Popolo its oval shape, with fountains and an Egyptian obelisk in the middle. From the top you see the whole square, the twin churches and, beyond, the domes of the centre with St Peter's.
The avenue around it is lined with busts of famous Italians, and there is a 19th-century water clock in a pond. From here you walk straight into Villa Borghese.
