Hotel American went up on Leidseplein in the early 20th century, and its grand café is one of the most beautiful interiors in the city. It blends Dutch Art Nouveau and Art Deco, with stained glass, bronze lamps, arches and high ceilings.
For decades it was a meeting place for writers and artists, and today it is mostly a place for breakfast or an unhurried coffee away from the noise of the square. The building is a listed national monument.
