It holds the world's largest Van Gogh collection, around 200 paintings and 500 drawings that the painter's family kept after his death. The main building, by Gerrit Rietveld, opened in 1973; Kisho Kurokawa's oval extension is used for temporary exhibitions.
The galleries follow his life in order: the dark peasant scenes of Nuenen, the Paris years, the light of Arles with Sunflowers and The Bedroom, and his final months in Saint-Rémy and Auvers. There are also letters to his brother Theo and works by the painters who shaped him. A major renovation is planned from 2028, with partial closures.
