Its name means "skinny bridge", after the narrow first bridge built here in the 17th century. Today's white wooden drawbridge crosses the Amstel between Kerkstraat and Nieuwe Kerkstraat and is one of the few wooden bridges left in the city.
It still opens to let taller boats through, and watching it rise is a very Amsterdam moment. At dusk hundreds of light bulbs trace its outline over the river, with the Carré theatre a few steps away.
