Opened in 1865, the park is named after the poet Joost van den Vondel, whose statue stands inside. Its 47 or so hectares are laid out in the English landscape style, with ponds, lawns, bridges and paths that half of Amsterdam cycles through.
Inside are the Blauwe Theehuis, a round 1930s tea house, the open-air theatre with free summer shows, and the rose garden. On sunny weekends it fills with people picnicking, jogging and playing music.
