Pere Romeu opened Els Quatre Gats in 1897 on the ground floor of the Casa Martí, a Modernista building by Puig i Cadafalch, modelled on the Le Chat Noir cabaret in Paris. It was the heart of Barcelona's bohemian scene, where Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol and a young Picasso met.
Picasso held his first solo show here in 1900 and drew the cover of the menu. It closed in 1903 and reopened decades later with its original décor restored, including Casas's famous painting of himself on a tandem bicycle.
