Food has been sold on this stretch of the Rambla since the Middle Ages, and the current market was built in the mid-19th century; the large iron roof with its Modernista entrance was added in 1914. It is Barcelona's most famous market and one of the best known in Europe.
It has around 200 stalls of fruit, fish, seafood, mushrooms, ham and spices, and several counters where what you buy is cooked on the spot. A phased renovation began in 2026, but the market stays open.
