The Habsburgs built the fortress on top of Gellért Hill after the 1848 revolution, more to watch over the city than to defend it. Above it stands the Liberty Statue of 1947, a woman holding up a palm leaf.
After eleven years closed for works, it reopened in April 2026 with a new park, viewpoints and an exhibition inside. It is the highest point above the centre, taking in the bridges, Parliament, the castle and the whole of Pest.
