Kilometres of natural caves run beneath Castle Hill. Before the Second World War an emergency hospital was set up in them, which during the siege of Budapest in 1944-45 treated far more wounded than it was built for, and it was used again in the 1956 revolution.
During the Cold War it was refitted as a secret nuclear bunker. The tour goes through operating theatres, wards and ventilation machinery, with wax figures and original medical equipment, and explains the fear of nuclear war.
