The Church of Our Lady of Buda was built in the 13th century and takes its popular name from King Matthias Corvinus, who married here twice. Under Ottoman rule it was a mosque, and Frigyes Schulek restored its Gothic look in the late 19th century, adding the colourful Zsolnay tile roof.
Franz Joseph and Sisi were crowned here in 1867, as was the last king, Charles IV, in 1916. Inside, walls and columns are painted with Hungarian floral and geometric patterns, and the gallery has a small museum with replicas of the crown.
