It opened in 1852 opposite the Estrela basilica, which Queen Maria I had built in the late 18th century and whose dome you can climb. It is a romantic garden of curving paths, duck ponds, grottoes and huge trees, some from other continents.
In the middle is an iron bandstand from the late 19th century, and several cafés with terraces under the trees. Next door is the English Cemetery, where novelist Henry Fielding is buried.
