It stands on the highest point of Toledo, fortified since Roman times. Its current square shape with four towers comes from the rebuilding Charles V ordered in the 16th century. It was destroyed during the 1936 siege in the Civil War and rebuilt afterwards.
Today it houses the Army Museum, with weapons, uniforms and models covering Spain's military history, and on the top floor the Castilla-La Mancha regional library.
