Les Invalides

Invalides

Louis XIV founded it in 1670 to house the wounded and elderly soldiers of his armies, and an institution still cares for veterans here today. The Dôme church by Jules Hardouin-Mansart was finished in 1706, and its gilded dome is one of the outlines of Paris.

Beneath it, in a circular crypt, lies Napoleon's tomb, since 1861, a great red quartzite sarcophagus; his remains came back from St Helena in 1840. The Army Museum has a huge armour collection and rooms on both world wars.
