Gustave Eiffel built it between 1887 and 1889 for the World's Fair marking the Revolution's centenary, using some 18,000 iron parts and two and a half million rivets. It was meant to be taken down after 20 years but was saved by its usefulness as a radio antenna. Today it stands about 330 metres high with its antennas.
You go up to two platforms, by lift or by stairs to the second, and from there another lift takes you to the top at 276 metres. Every night, at the start of each hour, it sparkles for five minutes with 20,000 bulbs.
